Istoric: aceasta rasa este inca una dintre rasele elvetiene urmase ale cainilor locali incrucisati cu Mastiffi adusi de romani. Rasa a fost denumita dupa cantonul Berna si a fost dezvoltata ca o rasa completa pentru ferme, pentru tractiune, manatul vitelor si paza. Cainele de munte de Berna este singurul dintre Sennenhundzii elvetieni cu blana lunga completa.
Descriere fizica: Cainele de munte de Berna este un caine mare, puternic, cu o constitutie patrata; cap mare; craniu lat, plat; si bot drept. Rasa are ochi maro inchis, nas negru si urechi triunghiulare de dimensiuni medii, pozitionate sus pe craniu. Pieptul este adanc iar coada este lunga si stufoasa. Blana este lunga, stralucitoare si dreapta sau usor ondulata, tricolora cu o baza neagra si pete ruginii si albe.
Inaltime: 58-69 cm.
Greutate: 34-48 kg.
Temperament: cainii din aceasta rasa sunt prietenosi, siguri pe sine si blanzi. Unii pot manifesta un comportament rece fata de straini, dar in general se inteleg bine cu toata lumea, inclusiv cu copiii si alte animale.
Nivel de activitate: moderat.
Cel mai bun stapan: se descurca cel mai bine cu un stapan sau o familie activa intr-un mediu suburban sau rural.
Nevoi speciale: ingrijirea blanii, socializare, dresaj.
Posibile probleme de sanatate: afectiuni autoimune, balonare, cancer, displazie de sold si cot, afectiuni oculare, probleme ale pielii si blanii, stenoza subaortica, boala von Willebrand, afectiuni ale tiroidei.
